What to Expect
Welcome to First Church!
We are cognizant that visiting a church for the first time can be exhilarating for some or frightening for others, yet here you are visiting our website, so you have already taken the first step in connecting with our community. We may look like a church on the outside and even on the inside, but what you will experience inside is quite different - both contemporary and relevant. Our music is alive with rhythm, our messages are relevant and progressive, and our spiritual community asks more questions than provides answers. We encourage you to bring your full authentic self to our community.
What to Expect
We are serious when we say bring your full authentic self to our spiritual community. We value authenticity and do not embrace “stuffy” religiosity. Most people who join us on Sunday mornings and during the week for our Justice and Spiritual Development events, would share that they are “spiritual and not religious”. You will find all ages, all cultures, and all gender expressions in our sacred space and together we celebrate the diversity and wonder of life. As Senior Pastor, I often quote the French Philosopher, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who stated, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” You can expect a room full of human beings seeking a spiritual experience, celebrating together as free thinkers! -Sr. Pastor James Pennington
Join us on Sunday mornings at First Church UCC Phoenix as we discover God and our relationship to each other by exploring our theologies and engaging our communities with a Justice-centered approach. Sunday celebrations are casual—come as you are—and includes contemporary, traditional, spirituals, and choruses. You will hear drums, guitars, keyboards and soulful voices.
What time is worship?
Sundays at 10:30 am
Is there parking?
Yes, we have parking directly north of our church and there is free parallel parking along 2nd and Willetta Streets. First Church UCC Phoenix is located off of the Light Rail (Central and McDowell stop).
What if I have children?
We welcome children to join us during service or in our education wing, just look for the signs! Our certified nursery staff provides a safe and loving environment. Toddlers and older children are welcome to join us for the opening portion of our service followed by the Children’s Message with Pastor James. From here, children are dismissed to participate in Sunday School with one of our many volunteers.
What if I want to learn more?
We’d love to hear from you. If you are interested in learning more, we host a quarterly casual meal with our Pastors, Leadership Team, and other visitors. Please contact Associate Pastor Susan at email@example.com for more information and dates.
